In recent years, about this time of the year, members of the our congregation get busy with their knitting and baking. It's all for Christmas on the River, a project of the Seamen's Church Institute that the cathedral supports. The ministry provides Christmas gift boxes to the men and women who work the tugboats on our inland waterways that provide so many of the resources on which our society depends. The gift boxes contain hand knitted scarves, home baked cookies, other small gift items and holiday greetings. In recent years, cathedral volunteers have been packing approximately hundreds of boxes for distribution.
2014 Christmas on the River
Volunteers are needed with baking, knitting and packing.
If baking, package cookies six to a quart size freezer bag. If the recipe includes nuts, label the bags accordingly. Cookies are to be placed in the cathedral kitchen's freezer.
For knitters, handmade scarves are always welcome. Also needed this year are new or gently used paperback books--spy novels, westerns, mysteries or science fiction. These items may be left at the church reception desk.
All items -- cookies, scarves or books -- are to be dropped off no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, December 6.
Packing date is Saturday, December 6, at 8:30 a.m. to noon. This is a fun, family-friendly event. Refreshments will be served. Those helping with the packing are free to come and go as their schedules permit. For questions or for more information, contact John Mendez.
