Summer Mission Trips for Youth and Adults

Youth and adults of our cathedral will be embarking on two faith-deepening experiences as part of mission trips this summer - one to Mountain T.O.P. in the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee and one to El Hogar de Amor y Esperanza, an Episcopal orphanage in Honduras.

"These two trips are incredible opportunities," says Canon Nancy Turner Jones. "We have made so much progress in a short time from no mission trips just a few years ago to two potentially life-changing mission experiences this summer for youth and adults at the cathedral. It's exciting."

For more information about either trip, contact Slocomb Reed. However, please note that both trips are full. Still want to go? Make plans to sign up for next year!

For Youth

Mountain T.O.P. (Tennessee Outreach Project) is an interdenominational, non-profit Christian Mission affiliated with the Tennessee Conference of the United Methodist Church, dedicated to rural life ministry in an impoverished area of the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee. While primarily focused on home repair to serve the needs of the people of the area, the ministry attends to social, emotional, physical and spiritual needs as well.

Mountain T.O.P. is also a place for youth to experience contemporary-style worship in a manner that helps them better understand the purpose behind the service work they do, all the while developing deep faith relationships.

"Our youth group had a phenomenal experience last year and we're excited to be heading back this coming summer," says Slocomb Reed, the cathedral's director of youth ministries.

The mission trip will run for June 9-16.

For Youth & Adults

El Hogar de Amor y Esperanza (The Home of Love and Hope) is an Episcopal orphanage in Honduras that takes in young children who have been deserted by their parents. The staff of the orphanage raises the children in a loving environment, providing for their needs while teaching them to how to achieve their dreams for their futures. Visiting church groups work to improve the facilities and nurture the children by engaging in healthy activities and the building of relationships with them.

The cathedral will be taking a group of twelve to fourteen people, half adults and half youth (age 15 to 18) to El Hogar from June 30 to July 7.

Faith Partners Support Mission Trips

Members of our cathedral who will not be making the mission trips will still be able to participate as faith partners. Faith partners give members of the mission teams the spiritual, social and financial support they need to better build relationships with the organizations with whom they serve. These contributions are fulfilling for both our mission team members as well as our faith partners themselves.

What do faith partners do? First, they pray for teams members as they prepare for, participate in and return from their missions. Faith partners also support individual team members with notes of encouragement. And finally, faith partners contribute financially to the mission trips as they are able to. To become a faith partner, contact Slocomb Reed.
