Dungeons & Dragons Lock-in
On Friday, March 21
, the cathedral Youth Program will hold a Dungeons and Dragons
overnight. This pre-internet, pre-computers, decades old paper-and-dice-based role-playing game is a socially oriented game that teaches leadership and teamwork in a way that the cathedral teenagers have come to enjoy.
This is an opportunity for youth to reinvent themselves from the ground up for one night and engage in fantastic adventure with their friends. Those who attend will build a new character during dinner on Friday evening and then play that character throughout the night. Do not bring pre-existing characters. The game play will be designed for beginners. Register with Slocomb Jenkins Reed. Details to come.
Youth Confirmation Retreat
The Youth Confirmation Retreat will be held from Friday, April 4, through Sunday, April 6
. All members of the cathedral Youth Group are encouraged to attend. Contact Slocomb Jenkins Reed
for full details.
Friends of El Hogar Gala
The cathedral will hold The Friends of El Hogar Gala on Sunday, April 13
, from 5 to 8 p.m. All proceeds from this fundraiser dinner will go directly to El Hogar Ministries
. For more information, contact Slocomb Jenkins Reed
On Sunday mornings at 10 a.m., Christ Church Cathedral offers a special worship opportunity for our youth grades six through 12. The Youth Liturgy is a supplemental Liturgy of the Word for our youth involving contemporary music led by our Youth Band, activity - and conversation - based study of lessons from the 10 a.m. service, and youth-led prayer. The Youth Liturgy runs concurrent to the 10 a.m. service, and afterwards, our youth rejoin their families for the remainder of the service.
This year the high school and middle school teenagers will be split into separate groups for the formation portion of the liturgy. This will allow for more age-appropriate discussion and more adult volunteer involvement with our teenagers.
The Youth Band
Our youth band is getting off the ground and excited to begin playing music together. We play music from various rock-n-roll genres, classic and contemporary Christian hits, along with traditional Episcopal hymns with a fresh sound.
Band practices are on Wednesdays, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. All youth are invited to participate. Our youth band is looking for a drummer, a pianist, and youth with singing experience. We will also incorporate any of the other musical talents of our youth into the band.
Opportunities to be Lay Ministers
In addition to the opportunities offered in the Youth Liturgy, youth can serve as acolytes, lay readers and chalice bearers on Sunday mornings during the regular services. For more information, contact Slocomb Jenkins Reed.
Overview of the Youth Program
Our youth programs help young people meet the challenges of their lives in a manner that promotes health and wholeness, self-respect and respect of others. We also offer special activities for fun or service. For more information about our youth ministry or any youth event, contact director of youth ministries Slocomb Jenkins Reed.
The cathedral empowers our youth to live according to the teachings and example of Jesus and prepares them for a Christ-filled life journey. We do this through activities, discussion and reflection regarding the Bible and Christian lifestyle and through opportunities to live out God's call to all Christians that we be the yes, hands and feet of Jesus in the world.
